In the cast of AniMat’s Crazy Cartoon: Silly Old Deadly Bear (2022)
Four children make a mysterious discovery on their home planet that leads to them becoming lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law in “Skeleton Crew”; plus more stars from a galaxy far, far away. The holographic circus that entertains Neel’s young siblings is the same one Chewbacca’s family sees in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special (1978). While “Skeleton Crew” is aimed at kids in an effort to win over the next generation of Star Wars fans, it surprisingly appeals to older viewers as well. In this Star Wars series, four children discover a buried spaceship in the forest of Attina, a peaceful and prosperous planet hidden in a galaxy filled with pirates, greed, and chaos.

Dreaming of adventure — at least one of them — the kids accidentally activate the ship and end up lost on the other side of the galaxy. But because the kids have lived a sheltered life, they often get into trouble. While Skeleton Crew is undeniably Star Wars-esque, it feels like ’80s kids’ adventure movie—say, The Goonies—but set in space. For longtime fans, it’s full of nostalgic touches, from gear and spaceships to alien creatures, all reminiscent of the original trilogy. Hardcore fans will also love the many Easter eggs scattered throughout, bringing back fond memories of the franchise’s early days.
The young actors, while less experienced, do a good job
I particularly liked the younger versions of the various alien species we know from previous films. This makes the galaxy feel more connected, showing that some alien races aren’t just one-offs, but a constant presence. There are also fun cameos, like a brief glimpse of a boy who looks like a young Kylo Ren. These little details keep you hooked and make you want to explore more. Jude Law, the biggest star of the cast, doesn’t appear until the end of the second episode, so it’s difficult to gauge the overall acting quality early on.
The special effects are impeccable and leave nothing to criticize
The two leads stand out and remind me of the performances in classics like The Goonies or Stand by Me. One of the four children is a non-human alien, making it difficult to judge their acting, and the other wears a cybernetic visor that hides much of their facial expressions, reminiscent of Geordi La Forge from Star Trek. The production quality is top-notch and Disney’s budget is clearly visible. However, the episodes are quite short and the long credits – over five minutes – seem excessive. Since the season only has eight episodes, I fear the story may not progress much unless the pace picks up significantly.
Despite these concerns, Skeleton Crew was a pleasant surprise
It’s fun, nostalgic, and will appeal to viewers of all ages. I’m excited to see where the story goes and I’m glad it has something for adult fans of the Star Wars universe too.
